WINNIPEG, MB – Ashley Demery is following her dream to one day work in the world of business and finance and provide her six-year-old son with a better life. The 21-year-old single mom graduated from the Winnipeg Adult Education Centre and is now taking classes in Business and Economics at The University of Winnipeg, with the assistance of a $25,000 Buhler Bursary.

“Education has always been very important to me but when I had my son I dropped out of school to look after him,” said Demery. “It means so much to have this bursary. It takes away the stress of paying for loans and will really make my home life easier.”

Demery says she has always loved numbers and math and became very interested in how businesses work when she volunteered at Sam’s Place, an Elmwood bookstore and café.  “I can’t wait to learn more, especially in the area of financial analysis.”

The Buhler Bursary in Business and Economics was created by John and Bonnie Buhler, totaling $25,000 ($10,000 in year one and $5,000 for the following three years). It is awarded annually to a full-time student with a declared major in Business & Administration or Economics with demonstrated financial need and satisfactory academic progress, with preference given to a single parent. The bursary covers full tuition and provides allowances for living expenses and book costs.
