Prominent Physicist Neil Turok to Deliver Lecture

Renowned South African physicist Neil Turok, Director of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, will deliver his lecture Higgs Bang as part of the Canadian Conference on General Relativity and Relativistic Astrophysics, taking place at The University of Winnipeg from May 21 – 23.

One of the world’s leading minds in physics and cosmology, the former Princeton professor and Cambridge Chair in Mathematical Physics is known for his innovative approach. In 2012 Turok was selected to deliver the prestigious CBC Massey Lectures. His resulting series
“The Universe Within: From Quantum to Cosmos” sold out in other cities across Canada. This lecture provides people in Winnipeg with an exciting chance to hear Turok speak live.

Where: Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall, The University of Winnipeg, 515 Portage Avenue

The lecture is free and open to the public, however seating is limited. Tickets can be held at the door; to make a reservation please call the physics department office at 786-9852 or email CCGRRA@uwinnipeg.ca. Unreserved tickets will be available at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lecture Abstract: Recent measurements using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Planck Satellite have revealed the universe to us, from scales a billion times smaller than an atom to ten trillion times larger than the solar system. Amazingly, the universe turned out to be simpler than we expected, in both cases. This is profoundly encouraging to those of us seeking deep explanations for the origin and the future evolution of the universe. In the talk, I will review a very recent idea: that the Higgs field discovered by the LHC played a key role in initiating the big bang, and that it will initiate another big bang in the future.
