Prof From Saudi Arabia Researches Children’s Texts

SabahWEBWINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg welcomes Dr. Sabah Aisawi, Assistant Professor at the College of Arts, University of Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as a Visiting Research Fellow. From February to June, the Centre for Research in Young People’s Texts and Cultures (CRYTC) will be hosting Dr. Aisawi. While here, Dr. Aisawi plans to research the representation of disability in children’s literature from a cross-cultural perspective and cultural diversity in children’s literature more generally.

“I have chosen to spend my sabbatical at CRYTC- University of Winnipeg as it is one of the most well-known centres worldwide in my field of research,” said Dr. Aisawi. “It is sure to be the place where any researcher looking for good resources, experience and the opportunity to meet with eminent professors and researchers would want to be. As I started corresponding with the Head of the Centre, Professor Mavis Reimer, and the Research Coordinator, Ms. Larissa Wodtke, I realized I have made the right choice. They have been extremely helpful and generous during the arrangements for the visit and in my settling in the city after I have arrived to Winnipeg. I am really looking forward to making the most out of my visit and to keeping my link to the University of Winnipeg after I go back home.”

Dr. Aisawi will be teaching a new children’s literature course at the University of Dammam in 2013 and will consult with faculty who teach in the field of young people’s texts and cultures at The University of Winnipeg.

Dr. Aisawi was the first woman to gain a PhD in Saudi Arabia in the field of children’s literature, and is a contributor to the Guide to Children’s Writers and Illustrators in Saudi Arabia.
