Devin Latimer won the award for best roots and traditional album for Key Principles.
WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg congratulates multi-talented faculty member Devin Latimer for his win at the Juno awards gala dinner held in Calgary on Saturday, April 5, 2008.
Latimer, an instructor in the Chemistry department, is the bass player for the band Nathan, which won the award for best roots and traditional album for Key Principles. Devin’s wife, Keri, is the lead singer for Nathan. The couple was unable to attend the Juno award ceremony because their child, Oscar, was born just a few days before the awards.
“It is amazing that in one week we got an Oscar and a Juno,” joked Devin. “My students are happy for me and I think, surprised to learn that I do something like this on the side, that we have a life outside the classroom! Winning the Juno is a wonderful surprise and especially great for Keri and Shelley who are the songwriters and voices of the band.”
Nathan is an alt-country band from Winnipeg. Their album, Jimson Weed, won two Western Canada Music Awards and two Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2007, Nathan released Key Principles, which has also won outstanding roots album at the Western Canadian Music Awards.
The band consists of singer/guitarist Keri Latimer, singer/accordionist/banjo-ist/guitarist Shelley Marshall, bassist Devin Latimer and drummer Damon Mitchell. Together, they harness the essence of the Canadian Prairies.
Nathan will be playing at the upcoming Jazz Winnipeg Festival in June.
