UWinnipeg’s Professor Emerita, Dr. Sandra Kirby is a contributor to the new documentary Play Fair.   It draws inspiration from Playing It Forward: 50 Years of Women and Sport in Canada by Guylaine Demers; Lorraine Greaves; Marion Lay; Sandra Kirby. This documentary will be aired on Sportsnet* several times during the upcoming Pan Am Games. The documentary also can be seen after 5:00 pm EST on July 15, 2015 on the Internet at Play Fair.

Playing It Forward is a vast collection of stories about women in sport in Canada. It explores their evolving roles in all facets of the industry. The creators of this book and documentary are a diverse team made up of athletic interests and abilities, united by the necessity of the project.

“Modern sport is progressive because of women’s participation,” expressed Kirby. “This documentary combined with the World Cup 2015 will certainly expand the public understanding of what it takes for athletes to play and compete – what hurdles they have to overcome and how they have made sport better.”

Playing It Forward is a resource ensuring that the work of Canadian women breaking down barriers is recognized; and is part of the work that The Feminist History Society began in February 2008. The Society has made it their mission to rigorously document the Canadian feminist movement between the years 1960 and 2010.
