New Student Scholarship For 2SLGBTQ* Community

Five dollars from every UWinnipeg Belong T-shirt sold at the Campus Store will go towards the new student award.

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg Senate has approved a new scholarship for students who identify as members of the 2SLGBTQ* community. Available this fall, the newly created University of Winnipeg Alumni Association 2SLGBTQ* Student Award is a $500 award for a second-, third-, or fourth-year undergraduate student who is active in community service or demonstrates academic promise in research on topics with particular relevance to the 2SLGBTQ* community.

The award is initially funded by the Alumni Association Past Presidents Legacy Fund, which was created in 2010 by the UWinnipeg Alumni Council, as well as by the Mary C. Rowell Prize fund. Ongoing support for the award will include proceeds from sales of the Pride-themed “Belong” t-shirt that was designed by UWinnipeg last year for its Pride Week celebrations and is available for purchase at the UWinnipeg Campus Store or online.

“We are very proud that The University of Winnipeg is an inclusive and accessible community — a place of learning for all students, for every person of every unique and nuanced identity. This new student scholarship is just another illustration of that principle,” said Dr. Annette Trimbee, President and Vice-Chancellor.

“The University of Winnipeg is a special and important place to our 50,000-plus alumni community, and we are always looking for ways to give back and help new students succeed. Many of us also benefitted from the help of others, and we are thrilled that this new award will support the success of UWinnipeg students in the 2SLGBTQ* community,” said Ruth Dickinson, UWinnipeg Alumni Association President.

Eligible students may apply for the University of Winnipeg Alumni Association 2SLGBTQ* Student Award via the Awards & Financial Aid web page on the UWinnipeg website (uwinnipeg.ca/awards) in July. The 2018-19 scholarship application deadline is October 5, 2018.

The University of Winnipeg’s 2018 Pride Week celebration runs from May 23 until June 3. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends are all invited to participate in a range of activities on campus that includes the raising of the Pride and Two-spirit flags on May 25 at 10:00 am in Portage Commons (campus front lawn), a speaker series, and a group march in the city’s Pride parade on June 3.
