New Scholarships & Prizes in Research at UWinnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB–The German-Canadian Studies Fellowship Competition for 2012 has been substantially expanded at The University of Winnipeg.  There are now two new graduate scholarships and two new graduate thesis awards added to the already existing graduate scholarships, undergraduate essay prize, and community research grants.

“German-Canadians have a long and rich history of contributing to Canadian society and culture,” said UWinnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor Lloyd Axworthy. “This fellowship program demonstrates the university’s commitment to high-quality academic and community research which contributes to Canada’s rich multicultural heritage.”

“The two new scholarships strengthen Master’s and doctoral research in German-Canadian history at UWinnipeg,” said Dr. Alexander Freund, Chair in German-Canadian Studies. “This makes a total of four new graduate scholarships in addition to the existing undergraduate essay prize and research grant open to everyone thanks to generous funding is provided by the Spletzer Family Foundation Inc.”

More information and application forms are available online.

The deadline for all scholarships, prizes, and grants postmarked is Tuesday, May 15, 2012.

The funding program supports a wide variety of public and academic projects that document the history and culture of German immigrants and their descendants in Canada. Past scholarship recipients have investigated the history of immigrants in Winnipeg, Montreal, British Columbia, and other places in Canada.

Other researchers have studied how immigration changed German speakers’ language use and the image of Canada in German literature. Several past scholarship holders have gone on to become professors at universities in Paris, Montreal, and Winnipeg. Grants that are open to the general public have supported film makers and allowed K-12 teachers to buy audio recorders for their students to carry out oral history projects.
