University of Winnipeg Politics Chair Jim Silver and Institute of Urban Studies Director Jino Distasio launched an innovative new Bachelor of Arts Degree Program in Urban and Inner-City Studies on June 14, 2007. This unique program begins this fall and combines a traditional urban studies focus with inner-city issues, and the experiences of Aboriginals, immigrants and new Canadians-themes that resonate with the current state of our modern Canadian cities.

African drumming, an Aboriginal drum honour song and opening prayers by Elder Linda McEvoy welcomed more than 100 guests at the program launch at Thunderbird House, an Aboriginal inner-city centre. The impressive turn out from a diverse cross-section of urban residents echoes the nature of the program aimed at non-traditional students.
