The University of Winnipeg’s Centre for Interdisciplinary Justice Studies (CJIS) is co-hosting a national conference, Placing Justice: Critical Perspectives on Space, Justice, Law and Order, from Monday, May 9 to Wednesday May 11, 2016 at UWinnipeg. This conference is held in conjunction with Critical Perspectives: a Critical Criminology Workshop, a joint initiative of Carleton and University of Ottawa, and is funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Connection Grant. Placing Justice will feature a variety of thematic sessions, artistic exhibits, and panel discussions on space, place, and justice. This conference is open, inclusive, and free to attend. All are welcome.

“This is the first joint conference of the CIJS and Critical Perspectives to be held in Winnipeg, making it a truly national interdisciplinary justice dialogue,” shared UWinnipeg’s Dr. Kevin Walby, Criminal Justice. “Placing Justice will bring together scholars, artists, and practitioners of interdisciplinary justice, criminology, and geography from across Canada and beyond, connecting academics and students from multiple disciplines to explore this year’s theme, place, space, and justice.”

Critical Perspectives: a Critical Criminology Workshop provides an annual Ottawa-based forum for critical scholars and community stakeholders to examine criminological and social justice issues.

Since 2009, the CIJS, housed in the Department of Criminal Justice at UWinnipeg, has held an annual workshop at UWinnipeg that brings together national and international scholars, students, and practitioners of justice across the disciplines. The CIJS encourages fluency in law and justice issues in the community. This fluency is essential to both knowledge mobilization and engagement with social policy as it relates to the means by which we are governed.

The conference sponsors include the Justice Research Institute, SSHRC, Research Manitoba, and the Manitoba Law Foundation; as well as a number of sponsors from within the UWinnipeg community, including the CIJS, the Dean of Arts, the office of the AVP Research and Innovation, the Chancellor’s Research Chair program, the Departments of History, Urban and Inner City Studies, Religion and Culture, Women’s & Gender Studies, Sociology, Geography, and the University of Winnipeg Criminal Justice Students’ Association.
