The University of Winnipeg  English department is delighted to announce that Jennifer Still is the tenth Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence, until Friday March 6, 2015.

She will be presenting at the annual the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence Distinguished Lecture on “Grief Silhouettes” on Friday, February 27, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 2M70 (second floor of  Manitoba Hall) at the University of Winnipeg. This  is free and open to the public.

The lecture will be followed by a reception with light refreshments and a cash bar.

Still is also hosting a series of open writing sessions for the public, called the The O, Pen! Writing Sessions, during her residency.

All writers, at any stage, in any genre, including those about to write (yes, you, with the journal in your pack!), are invited to this weekly, generative, exploratory session with your pen and imagination,” expressed Still.

Jennifer Still is a poet, bookmaker, mentor, and editor. She is the author of two poetry collections, Girlwood and Saltations. Winner of the 2012 Banff Centre Bliss Carman Poetry Award and the 2012 John Hirsch Award for Most Promising Manitoba Writer, Still was a mentor for the 2013 Banff Centre of the Arts Wired Writing Studio and is a poetry editor for the Winnipeg-based literary journal CV2. Still’s third collection—in its final stitches—is a composition in ink and thread on a parchment scroll. With her fresh, original voice and her enthusiasm for mentoring emerging writers, Still is a very welcome addition to our campus and the larger community. The UWinnipeg writing community anticipates her reading and her forthcoming residency with great excitement.

Still will have an office in the English department, where writers and emerging writers in the community may meet with her for a free consultation about their writing. Please call 204.786.9283 (after January 20), to book an appointment.

Still’s residency is made possible by the Carol Shields family, the Friends of Carol Shields, and the University of Winnipeg.
