International scholar presents 2015 El-Tassi Lecture

World renowned scholar and Harvard educated, Dr. Patrice Brodeur will be at UWinnipeg to present the 2015 El-Tassi Lecture on Wednesday, January 21 at 7:00 pm in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. Brodeur is the Director of Research at the KAICIID Dialogue Centre in Vienna, Austria. A polyglot with knowledge in 11 languages (including Arabic, Hebrew, French + Persian), he will be speaking on Building Space for Dialogue: Identity, Politics and Religion.

“The El Tassi Lecture series provides badly-needed insight on political and religious dynamics in the Middle East,” expressed Dr. Dean Peachey, Executive Director, Global College, Coordinator, Human Rights & Global Studies. “Patrice Brodeur is a remarkable speaker, who has devoted his career to enhancing dialogue in difficult settings. He brings a fresh perspective to current challenges in the Middle East.”

Brodeur comes with over thirty years of experience in the area of interreligious and intercultural dialogue, primarily as an academic researcher and educator, the highlights of Brodeur’s career include the development of an interdisciplinary research team on Islam, pluralism and globalization at the University of Montreal (Canada), focusing on past and present intra – and interreligious, as well as inter – civilizational and inter-worldview forms of dialogue.

Highlights of Brodeur’s career include the development of two interdisciplinary research teams. The first one at the KAICIID Dialogue Centre in Vienna, Austria – which began in the summer of 2013. It aims to foster research on interreligious dialogue. The second one, begun in 2005 at the University of Montreal,  as a Canada Research Chair on Islam, Pluralism and Globalization. It focuses on past and present intra- and inter-religious, as well as inter-civilizational and inter-worldview forms of dialogue. These research activities have been possible through funding from and partnerships with leading Canadian (SSHRC, CIF, CIC, DFAIT, etc.) and US (USIP) research and government agencies as well as international foundations and U.N. agencies (UNICEF, UNESCO, Alliance of Civilizations).

The KAICIID Dialogue Centre (King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz International Centre for Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue) was founded to enable, empower and encourage dialogue among followers of different religions and cultures around the world. Located in Vienna, the Centre is an independent, autonomous, international organization, free of political or economic influence.

The event is presented by Global College and co-sponsors the Ridd Institute for Religion and Global Policy, United Centre for Theological Studies,  Canadian International Council + Manitoba Multifaith Council.
