UWinnipeg’s Gallery 1C03 is offering free education workshops to teachers from schools across the city (also available for neighbourhood youth organizations) on the current exhibit A Putting Down of Roots: 40 Years of CV2. This exhibit celebrates the 40th anniversary of locally published Contemporary Verse 2: The Canadian Journal of Poetry and Critical Writing (CV2). The education program runs from now until November 13, 2015, and is designed for children and youth in grades three through twelve.

Gallery 1C03’s education workshop for A Putting Down of Roots will allow students to experience and respond to contemporary verse through a medium that is typically a meeting place for both text and visual art – the ‘zine! Just like CV2, ‘zines are a homegrown form of media, and both are rugged and authentic.

“Gallery 1C03 has been running an education program for youth for several years”, notes Gallery Director/Curator Jennifer Gibson. “It benefits both those delivering the workshops and those on their receiving end. First, it offers an opportunity for the education volunteer team, who are typically University of Winnipeg art history majors or Bachelor of Education students, to gain valuable teaching experience in the arts. The school kids who attend the program from all parts of the city have the chance to visit our campus and engage in an enjoyable and creative learning experience. For many of these children, it’s their first contact with The University of Winnipeg, and Gallery 1C03 wants to be a welcoming ambassador for the campus in this way.”

Through both solo and collaborative response to actual verse from CV2 Journal, students will create their own ‘zines in the current workshop. In keeping with ‘zine culture, pages will be filled with various media including collage, original text, stamps, and drawings. Space will be left in each ‘zine for future exploration of and meaningful response to text or visual art, either individually or together as a group, once back in the classroom. Students will be encouraged to develop creative and critical thinking skills; expand choices for meaning making; enhance communication and collaboration competencies; develop understandings about people and practices in the visual arts; comprehend and respond personally to oral, literary, and media texts; celebrate and build community; and explore thoughts, ideas, feelings, and experiences.
