Exploring Northern, Fur Trade and Aboriginal Studies

WINNIPEG, MB – Close to 70 diverse presenters and 150 delegates from across North America will gather at The University of Winnipeg to explore Rupert’s Land studies from many different angles. Sessions will feature new work on Aboriginal history, the fur trade, Aboriginal-missionary relations, material culture, research on national historic sites, and many other topics. The 2010 Rupert’s Land Colloquium begins Wednesday evening, May 19, and ends midday on Saturday, May 22.

Numerous well-known and rising scholars and researchers will be presenting and attending: Ted BinnemaHeidi Bohaker, Gerhard Ens, Dale Gibson, Keith Goulet, Susan Elaine Gray, Cecilia Morgan, Jack Nisbet, Jacqueline Peterson, Carolyn Podruchny, Donald Smith, Sylvia Van Kirk, among others. Sessions open Thursday morning with a plenary on Aboriginal tangible cultural heritage. The Friday evening banquet will feature speakers Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, President and Vice-Chancellor, UWinnipeg and Edward Kennedy, CEO, North West Company.

“This is a major gathering of people who are absorbed in the study of Aboriginal, fur trade and Northern history in the Hudson Bay watershed area historically known as Rupert’s Land,” said Dr. Jennifer Brown, Canada Research Chair in Aboriginal Peoples and Histories and Director of The Centre for Rupert’s Land Studies at UWinnipeg. “A diverse, interdisciplinary group of researchers – historians, archivists, anthropologists, independent researchers – will connect at this Colloquium, as they have at all our previous biennial Colloquium gatherings.”
