Diversity Foods wins Spirit of Winnipeg Award

University of Winnipeg President and Vice-Chancellor, Annette Trimbee, congratulates Diversity Foods and its employees for winning a Spirit of Winnipeg Award in the social enterprise category.

The announcement by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce came at the 6th annual Gala on Friday, March 13, 2015. The Chamber’s elegant Spirit of Winnipeg Awards has become a signature event, bringing together the business community and non-profit organizations to honour and recognize 18 finalists for their innovative ideas.

Diversity Food Services is a joint venture of the University of Winnipeg’s Community Renewal Corporation (UWCRC) and SEED Winnipeg to deliver excellent food services, while providing meaningful employment opportunities. Diversity Food Services has taken the traditional Institutional Food Service model and converted it to a system that promotes sustainability, healthy food options, skills development for underemployed individuals, and reasonable prices for consumers.

There is also a UWinnipeg connection to the award winner in the Charity category. UWinnipeg’s Director of Institutional Analysis, Dr. Jodene Baker, is on the Board of Trustees of United Way Winnipeg — which was honoured in partnership with the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) for the development of Peg, Winnipeg’s community indicator system. Dr. Baker attended the award ceremony and delivered an acceptance speech on behalf of the recipients.
