Diversity Foods Wins 3rd Major Award

WINNIPEG, MB – The University of Winnipeg’s Diversity Foods Services will receive another prestigious award tonight, the 3rd major acknowledgment it has received this year. The Manitoba Round Table for Sustainable Development has selected Diversity Foods to receive the 2010 Manitoba Excellence in Sustainability Award in the category of Education for Sustainability. The award will be presented at the Manitoba Legislature tonight at 7:00 pm by the Honourable Bill Blaikie.

Diversity Food Services was nominated by the Canadian Community Economic Development Network, and was selected for its “accomplishments and efforts and commitment to sustainability.” Diversity Food Services is a joint venture of the University of Winnipeg’s Community Renewal Corporation’s (UWCRC) & SEED Winnipeg. The UWCRC’s mandate is to work towards developing a sustainable University community that is attractive to the faculty, staff, students and the greater community. SEED Winnipeg is a non-profit agency whose mandate it is to combat poverty and assist in the renewal of primarily inner-city communities.

On October 16, 2010, Food Matters Manitoba presented Chef Ben Kramer and Diversity Food Services with the Golden Carrot Award for “helping to revolutionize campus food services at The University of Winnipeg, by providing sustainable, affordable, fair and delicious foods.”

In April, Kramer and his team won the 2010 Winnipeg Iron Chef competition, beating out some of the finest restaurants in the city.

In June, 2009, The University of Winnipeg introduced Diversity Food Services, a new concept in campus dining. Diversity Foods offers nutritious, fairly priced and ethnically diverse food on campus and caters to the broader community. Wherever possible, Diversity uses locally sourced foods and organic ingredients.

Approximately 43 people from our surrounding community who may face barriers to meaningful work have received intense training and are now employed by Diversity Foods. In the coming months, employees and managers of Diversity Food Services will be invited to invest in its ownership. It is an approach that is unique among universities in Canada.
