Collegiate Students Walk for Water

Event to help people in Kenya access clean drinking water

WINNIPEG, MB – Rain showers bring clean water opportunities to Kalimini, Kenya with the help of Grade 10 students at The University of Winnipeg Collegiate. The students will Walk for Water on Friday, April 25 at 12:00 pm meeting on the Front Lawn of UWinnipeg (515 Portage Ave.). The money raised will go towards building a rainwater catchment and filtration system and large water tank. This $6,900 project will give clean drinking water to the community of Kalimini.

“This project was initiated by Grade 10 students after they saw pictures and heard stories from my time in Uganda this past December,” said Charlotte Arnold, Collegiate Instructor. “The students decided they wanted to take steps beyond awareness and they came up with the idea and fundraising plan.”

The Walk for Water grew out of the Current Affairs Course at The Collegiate. The students, under the guidance of Arnold, planned and researched the project on their own initiative. The water filtration system will serve 2000 people, provide better sanitation and better health for the people in Kalimini.

The students will walk 3.5 km, which represents the average 5-km daily walk people must take to collect water in countries and communities where water is scarce.
