Arrest in security incident of Dec 3, 2014 on campus

The University of Winnipeg offers sincere thanks to the Winnipeg Police Service and to campus security for their cooperation leading to a speedy arrest announced by police this morning.

On December 3, 2014, a young woman approached our security to say she had been groped while on an escalator on campus. She was supported in contacting Winnipeg police to report the incident immediately.

The University continues to support the affected student.

Following is the police statement released today – December 16, 2014:

WINNIPEG POLICE NEWS RELEASE DECEMBER 16, 2014

As previously released, on December 3, 2014 at approximately 11:45 a.m., a 23 year-old female was on the University of Winnipeg campus when she observed an unknown suspicious male watching her.

She proceeded to the escalators going from the 3rd floor to the 4th floor. As she was approaching the 4th floor, she was groped in the lower body from behind by the unknown male. The suspect then walked past the victim and left the area.

The victim immediately reported the incident to security and police were notified.

The investigation continued by members of the Division 11 Crime Unit who were able to identify a suspect. On December 15th the suspect was located and arrested without incident.

Joshua James WAPASH, 22 years of Libau, MB has been charged with Sexual Assault and Fail to Comply with Probation Order for his alleged involvement.

He was detained in custody.
